i think there is plenty on offer; it’s more a question of how to present it to young people in an attractive way, how to make it accessible and affordable. Sometimes people need a bit of encouragement to get the confidence to try something new. So what if you don’t like it ? – now you know for sure.

Have you any thoughts on this?

It depends on where you live – facilities are better in some towns or villages than in others. I think the problem sometimes is that older people (possibly even councillors!) think that young people ought to have certain types of facilities without involving young people or finding out what they would like. Young people should be involved in developing and whereever possible in running the facilities they want to see in their community

It really depends on your interests. There are probably more facilities in the larger towns and young folks from rural areas are often disadvantaged by a lack of available transport. Given the budget situation, there is little prospect of more leisure centres being built so more use will have to be made of the ones we have. Community Transport could be used to get young folks to their nearest facility and more taster sessions organised to try to get them interested in other activities.

Actually, I think there is enough, a big variety of different things to do. I can see that transport might be a problem, especially if you live far out of town and the bus service is not very good, so you might have to leave for home earlier than you wanted to. Maybe late night transport might be a possibility, though I wouldn’t be too hopeful at the moment, given we are so hard up. I think that young people in Dumfries and Galloway should perhaps be more adventurous in trying different sports. For example, my own interest is sailing but when they hold Kippford Regatta week most of the young people come from outside the area. Why is that? Why can’t local young people get involved in that? Or do they feel unwelcome? Maybe the Council should try to ‘persuade’ sports clubs to encourage local young people- maybe discounted deals.
