In my own way, help to lead it. Encourage people to have confidence in themselves, try to make peace, be kind.

Speak out when I feel strongly that something is right or wrong.

Smile when I mention to people they have dropped litter.

MSPs can’t do as much to improve the local community as councillors can, because its the local council which is in charge of most local services. However MSPs can work with councillors and local groups – supporting applications for funding, finding out what funding might be available, helping to publicise what’s happening. MSPs can also raise local issues with councillors and council officials.
Politicians of all types can help local groups by taking part in the activities they are organising – for example the clean up of the River Nith on Saturday morning.

I think the best people to improve a community are the people who live in it. They always know what is needed to make it better and the best thing that a Councillor can do is to make sure the support is there to enable and empower the community to make the things they want to happen, happen.

There’s no point in me telling you we’ve got loads of money to spend, because we haven’t, and it’ll get worse before it gets better. So no cash for flagship buildings, like sports centres and the like. But councillors will have to listen to people, who should tell us what they see as important and what is less so, especially regarding improving the community.
