Question: Why does EMA not take into account the number of children in a household? Do you think EMA is fair?? Should it not be available to everyone in full time education?

The EMA was designed to be fairly simple and relates to family income – though I’m not sure why the number of dependent children isn’t taken into account as it is with student loans. It was to help families who otherwise might fund it difficult to keep a student on at school, thats why it wasn’t available to everyone

The whole point of EMA is to help students from less well off households to stay on at school if they want to, and presumably those from better off families can get help from Mum and Dad. If there are more children in a family they will presumably get family allowance?

Hello, sarah. In an ideal world it should be available to everyone but we don’t live in an ideal world. I think the fairest way is to target those most in need.
