There’s not really a typical day – sometimes I’m in Edinburgh at Parliament and sometimes I’m in the constituency. Today I was in Edinburgh, I went to my office to check my emails then from 9.45am to 1.30pm I was in the Rural Affairs and Envrionment Commitee. I was supposed to meeting someone from Ofgem at 1.30 but she was ill and the meeting had to be rearranged. I got a call from ITV Tyne Tees Border to do an interview with them so I did that and got some lunch to take back to my office while I read the latest emails. I wrote a speech and some letters during the afternoon, also I went to give blood as the blood transfusion van was outside parliament but the queue was too big and I had too much work to do to wait! This evening I hosted a meeting in Parliament for Relationships Scotland, I went back to the flat I rent in Edinburgh at about 8pm and logged on to see what questions you had all asked me. Its 9.40 pm now and I haven’t had my tea yet.

A typical day? Waking just before 7am to listen to the local news – just to get me into the mood! I often shout at the radio if someone from another political group is saying something I don’t agree with. After breakfast, I head to Dumfries for the first meeting of the day; I cover 108 miles there and back. This week I’m in Dumfries every day but Friday when I’m in Kirkcudbright – only 66 miles there and back, which is nice. Some days I have another meeting in the afternoon which can mean I leave Dumfries about 5pm to come home for something to eat, to catch up with my husband and often head back out for another meeting. I have to attend 6 community councils and am on various outside bodies as well, such as Newton Stewart Museum and the Cinema. If I’m not out, I catch up on my mail, answer email communications, update my diary (Councillors don’t have the luxury of having a Secretary) and read committee papers. I also try to find some time, most days, to see my two grandchildren, five and two, as they make me happy.

There’s no such thing! But most of our committee meetings are held in the morning, and in the afternoon I catch up with e-mails and maybe go to see people in my ward. In the evening there are often meetings like community and school councils who expect me to put in an appearance, if not every month at least every other month. Yes, it’s all go!
