I wanted to do something different, and I had been a councillor before on the old district council of Nithsdale from 1992 to 1996. These district councils were abolished in 1996 and the new big council of Dumfries and Galloway took over everything. I couldn’t stand on that council as I was a teacher and someone who worked for the council. But I decided then that I might go back into politics as a councillor once I had retired from teaching. I think I underestimated the time I need to spend as a councillor, and probably could have made more money working half as much in supply teaching, so it was the wrong decision if it was money you wanted. I think also my family would like to see more of me, but they’re all grown up now so it’s not so important. But I believe passionately in the Scottish nationalist cause and wanted to do more for it, so I’m content to have become a councillor again, though it doesn’t leave me with much free time.
