There are many actions that can be taken to reduce pollution. Car and bus engines can be made more efficient, less polluting fuels can be used, electic vehicles are being developped and charging points need to be made available. Pollution can also be reduced by increasing energy efficiency and by relying on less polluting forms of power production. Waste also produces pollution so reducing waste by recycling and reusing also reduces pollution.

The Council is trying hard to reduce its carbon footprint. We have introduced a pool car system using energy efficient vehicles and have applied for a grant to purchase two electric cars for use in Dumfries. I think that town buses should also be energy efficient or electric. Dumfries now has bikes available for town journeys.

Depends what kind of pollution you mean. Pollution from cars can be dealt with by the police. The council has powers to deal with things like smoky chimneys, and force businesse and people to deal with it. Pollution like sewage in rivers is supposed to be dealt with by SEPA (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) but sometimes I think they can do better. Radioactive leaks from nuclear power stations and nuclear submarines can be very dangerous and life-threatening but the council has little power to deal with this. In fact, even SEPA has no power to stop nuclear submarines in Scottish waters leaking radioactive substances because it’s a defence matter under the control of the UK government who do….nothing. Meanwhile, Scotland glows in the dark.
