Question: how is the council helping the uninployed find a job?

    Its not really the responsibility of the council to help unemployed find work – that the job of the UK Department of Work and Pensions through Jobcentreplus. The Council does have a team which help people identify and claim benefits that they are entitled to

    This is not a Council function. We have schemes that encourage school leavers to go to college to learn skills that will help them to get a job.

    We try to encourage firms to set up here, especially if for some reason there are a lot of unemployed in a certain area. When we pass certain planning applications to be passed that sometimes means that there will be jobs created, for example a new supermarket or a wind farm. Sometimes, however, some people don’t like a new development (especially wind farms) even if it creates jobs.
