It wouldn’t be a decrease – the UK Government’s intention is to in crease VAT from 17.5% to 20%. I think this is a mistake because anyone who buys anything that’s not VAT exempt (ie food and childrens’ clothes) will have to pay more irrespective of their income. If taxation is to be increased I’d rather see an increase on higher rates of income tax

VAT is charged at 17.5% at the moment and the Government plan to increase it to 20% in January. No tax is ever popular but if VAT was reduced, the Government would simply think of another way of getting money from us.

That’s something controlled by London government, and neither our local government nor the Scottish government can change it. The SNP controlled Scottish government wants Scotland to raise our own taxes here in Scotland and then spend what we raise, right here in Scotland, and I totally agree with that, because that means we would be able to plan things much better to suit our own needs. It’s what other parts of the world, and not just countries, but parts of other countries like American, Australian and German states, and Canadian provinces, already do. So why not Scotland? And yes, we think the rate of VAT is too high for Scottish businesses and consumers, but until we control our own destiny we can’t change it.
