On a personal level I just don’t agree with their political priorities, and I think a lot of Scots don’t agree with them either. Maggie Thatcher did the Conservatives a lot of damage by introducing the poll tax into Scotland a year before it was due in the rest of the country, also her policies ruined manufacturing industry, which created a lot of unemployment in Scotland. I’m afraid that David Cameron’s forthcoming assault on the public sector will do similar damage as the public sector in Scotland accounts for a higher proportion of jobs. I don’t see the fortunes of the Scottish Conservatives recovering for quite some time.

I take it you mean, why are the Conservatives so unsuccessful in Scotland compared to England. I think they’re still suffering from what you could call the Margaret Thatcher legacy. Prime Minister Thatcher, in charge for most of the 1980s, was disliked by many Scots as that type of bossy English person who wanted to order the Scots around, close down our steel industries and coal mines, etc. If you believe a country has a collective memory I think she could have been compared to nasty people in the past like Edward I, ‘Hammer of the Scots’, Henry VIII, Oliver Cromwell, ‘Butcher’ Cumberland and others. And so, for a lot of Scots, the Conservatives came to be branded as the anti-Scottish party. And until they get rid of that label, they won’t have much success in Scotland. But it’s not my problem, I’m SNP!

Hi, william. I don’t know, really. As a party, they are no different here than anywhere else in the UK. I know it’s a long time ago but Margaret Thatcher introduced the poll tax first to Scotland and we have never really forgiven her or the Conservatives for that.
