I used to be a councillor before I was an MSP – guess I wanted to do both in order to be able to help people and to help shape decisions which affect local people

I had been a Community Councillor for 17 years, my children were both adults and I wanted a fresh challenge. I’d always been involved in the local community and really enjoyed helping people. It seemed natural to stand for Council but I have to admit I was a bit surprised when I got myself elected.

Two main reasons: As a member of the SNP I’m absolutely convinced that Scotland should be independent and the more councillors, MSPs and MPs we have the better chance there is of that happening. Also, having been a councillor before I thought I would like to try it again, as i enjoyed it, particularly being able to help people and communities.
