I get quite a lot of complaints about antisocial behaviour, which I take up with the Police and communtiy wardens (incidentally I think the community wardens are great and I really hope the Council doesn’t scrap them) and sometimes the housing associations if it affects their tenants.

I’ll have to get back to you on this one – I represent a ward in the Stewartry so am not familiar with the detail in Dumfries. Have you any specific area in mind?

I don’t live in Dumfries but suspect that all areas face the same problems. I think it helps if activities are provided for young folks. I know in my area the Midnight football helped reduce the level of anti social behaviour caused by young people. There is also a mediation service available to help older people affected by the behaviour of others. The police are consulted on new housing developments and they are assessed to make sure that safety is not compromised.

I’m on the Police committee and we do question the Chief Constable about how he uses his people, so we try to persuade him to send the force out around the town , especially at times like the weekends when there might be trouble. I’m sure he listens, though the chief Constable has the power to do things the way he thinks are best for Law and Order (it’s called operational matters!). Actually, Dumfries and Galloway is a very law abiding place compared to other parts of the country, so we must be doing something right. But we’re not complacent and have introduced things like midnight football to give young people other things to do and so hopefully divert them away from less desirable activities.
