No I don’t. I think the UK Government is cutting further and faster than it needs to for ideological reasons – a dislike of the public sector, Its going to increase umemployment and damage the economy

I dont think we quite know yet what is the actual level of cuts we face. But while ‘support’ would be overstating it, ‘Glumly accept as realistic given the circumstances’, would probably be an accurate statement.

The reality is that in the UK we have been spending beyond what we can afford.

    No,

They are cutting too far and too deep, because of their ideological obsession with destroying the public sector.

We all know that difficult decisions have to be made as a result of the recent world wide economic crisis, but I feel that we must also balance that with the need to make sure that we continue to move out of recession and not cut so far as to create another downturn.

The current LibCon administration of our Council have already indicated that they wish to impose swinging cuts on the people of Dumfries and Galloway and have also clearly shown they are happy to do so without even wanting to understand the actual impacts of those cuts.

I see it as my job to give them no quarter on this and to do what I can to force them to take full responsibility for their own decisions as we progress through the current budget setting process.

I fully support some of the things the Government are doing, such as the defence review but some I find difficult and would describe my support as qualified. I really care about Education and have difficulty accepting any cuts in that field. If Britain is to play a full and active part in the world economy, it has to have a highly skilled and educated workforce. I know some people argue that the Government is cutting too much too soon but we can’t go on spending what we don’t have.

No, I don’t support them, especially as it all went pear-shaped under the last UK (Labour) government, when the banks nearly went to the wall, and the present UK (Conservative/Liberal Democrat) government is bringing in the cuts to bring down the huge UK national debt. It wasn’t the fault of the present Scottish (SNP) government. However, as long as we are part of the UK system we will be subject to massive cuts.
But although I say I don’t support the budget cuts that doesn’t mean I won’t try to make sure that the cuts are applied in a way that is as fair as possible. For example, for many weeks now all the council groups on Dumfries and Galloway Council have been looking at ways to do this. We are hoping that what are called ‘front line services’ will be less affected than council jobs that are perhaps less important to the public.
Not being part of the council’s administration our SNP group could simply say ‘It’s not our mess, our problem’ and do nothing to help, but that wouldn’t be fair to the people of Dumfries and Galloway who voted for us, so we’ve got to think of fair ways of introducing the budget cuts and bring forward our suggestions to the Council.
