I would have preferred it if the Government didn’t have to make any cuts at all but who or what is blamed for the situation we find ourselves in doesn’t matter any more, the reality is that to pay back the national debt, cuts are inevitable. If Education is protected, then other services would have to identify ever further savings. The secret will be to ensure that students don’t suffer or ever notice that cuts have been made.

In Scotland the Scottish Government receives funding from the UK Government based on the “Barnett Formula” – if the UK Government reduces the Education budget the money coming to Scotland will also be reduced, But its then up to the Scottish Government to decide how it spends its money and how much it passes over to local authorities to fund their responsibilities such as education. Ultimately its down to councils to decide how to divide up what the have received and what they can raise from taxation. So a local authority could decide to protect educaiotn – but it would have to find the money from other council services such as social work, roads etc. Its a difficult decision to make

We don’t know yet how much money Scotland will be getting from London- the bad news will come later this month. Then Scottish government will decide how much the councils should get, and the councils will have to decide how to share out the money for all the services they provide- education, social work, police, etc. One thing for sure- it will be less than last year. Wouldn’t it be so much better if Scotand took charge of its own finances instead of waiting for a ‘hand out’ from London?
