Hmm. Politics yes definitely, party politics not yet. is there anything more creepy than seeing an infant prime minister on a party conference stage??
    But that’s just me.
Play the field: speak up at consultations, write to the papers but above all develop your OWN opinions. Go for it, it’s interesting. Politics is about how we live.

I would be delighted if more young people were involved in politics and I do try to encourage them to be interested. Unfortunately politicians and the media don’t always project a very good image of politics or politicians and that doesn’t help attract young people.

I would like young people to be more involved but have to say that I wasn’t very interested as a young person. You’ve got to remember that I’m pretty old and young folks were supposed to be seen and not heard in my day! It would be good to have a young person at our Area Committee meetings for instance and it would also be good for Councillors to take part in the work experience programme. I don’t know if there would be many young folks willing to work with a Councillor for a month, though; the work is hard and the days are long…..

Absolutely, so many decisions politicians take have an effect on young people as well as others. When I was young there was a lot of interest in politics by young people but that’s changed- it seems to have become unfashionable, something older people do. I think that’s a change for the worse. I think things like ‘I’m a Councillor, get me out of here’ will help. I think more could be done in schools and colleges, but some heads are nervous about encouraging it as they don’t want to be accused of favouring a particular party, so they back off.
