I’ve met some of the MSYPs on a number of occasions but there’s no formal arrangement for MSYPs to meet with MSPs – I am not sure why! Also we receive reports from the Youth Parliament from time to time.

When I was about 16 years old, I was an active member of a “Model Parliament”. My only involment with the Scottish Youth Parliament has been to support a candidate, who was at that time a youth representative on Lockerbie & District Community Council whilst I was the Chair of that CC. He was elected to the SYP and enjoyed his term of office.

I’ve not been to any sessions in Edinburgh but I’ve met some of the members at a meeting in the Oasis Centre in Dumfries and listened to what they had to say. I’m glad I was able to be there.

I’ve also met one of the members on a few occasions as she’s the daughter of a friend.

Do you think you should be more involved with the SYP?

Yes, I’ve always been disappointed that there is so little contact between the Scottish Parliament and the Youth Parliament, other than sometimes giving evidence to committees or attending briefings and receptions.

Yes, but it’s difficult if you’re not based in Edinburgh. Perhaps the Youth Parliament could do what the Scottish Government does and go ‘on tour’ round the country and have sessions from time to time in Dumfries, Stranraer, etc, then we could meet up with them more easily.
